Miami Cannibal: A Zombie?

Saturday, June 02, 2012 Stef dela Cruz 11 Comments

It’s all over the news: a man from Miami, dubbed the “Miami Cannibal”, was caught eating the face of a homeless man. He has purportedly eaten about 80 percent of the man’s face – and the cops shot him when he refused to stop. Now, rumors are spreading that he might be a zombie infected with the LQP-79 virus.

Here is a blog screenshot related to the Miami cannibal being dubbed as a zombie that has been going viral lately. According to this article, the virus also causes a form of necrotizing fasciitis (also known as the flesh-eating disease).

Miami Cannibal zombie

Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released guidelines for possible zombie attacks and outbreaks! So, is there truth to the claim that a zombie apocalypse is on the horizon? Read on for more information.

Is the Miami Cannibal really a zombie?

There are videos proliferating on YouTube and other websites of the cannibal from Miami as he kept eating the face of the homeless man – and they are gruesome. Oh, and did I mention that those videos were from the actual footage?

And here are the facts I have dug up regarding allegations that there is a zombie outbreak in the United States right now:

  • Yes, there was a man who ate the face of another guy. Rudy Eugene ate the face of Ronald Poppo on the McArthur Causeway. As Eugene ate the face of Poppo, a man in a bicycle saw what was happening and called the cops. The cops, after telling Eugene to stop, resorted to shooting him because he kept eating Poppo’s face.
  • As for the claims that the face-eating man was a zombie, there are no official reports claiming that this is the case. Official reports claim that the man was probably high on a hallucinogen or some other drug. There are news reports that there is a similar incident in another state, also due to this hallucinogen. Funny that the drug causes people to crave for, uh, human meat.
  • The virus, LQP-79, seems to be fictitious. Either that, or there is some cover-up going on. I’d go for the former – but then again, I may be dead wrong.
  • Necrotizing fasciitis is not fiction; it is real. It is a disease caused by “flesh-eating bacteria”, namely Streptococcus pyogenes, Clostridium perfringens, and many others, that cause necrosis (tissue death).
  • The CDC does have a page dedicated to zombie attacks and outbreaks, in case they happen. CDC claims that if we are capable of responding to a zombie outbreak, then we are capable of responding to other calamities, such as hurricanes and earthquakes. The page is complete with tips on what supplies to buy and it also comes with an emergency plan, in case a zombie apocalypse occurs in the future. Below is a screenshot of the page. You can also view the zombie preparedness page on CDC.

So, what do you think? Is there some sort of cover-up going on? Is a zombie apocalypse brewing? Is the cannibal from Miami really a zombie? Or are the rumors completely unfounded? Share your thoughts via a comment!

  6. And I want a house with a basement, a panic room, an earthquake-proof foundation, and an airtight room where no airborne toxins and microorganisms can't penetrate. LOL! If I find a plan for that, I'll inform you. ;)

And thanks for loving my blog! Hugs! <3

  8. I'd call him a classic cannibal. Zombie is just too much for US newspapers to milk public attention from a lame title. Yikes.
