Doctor Blogger in the Philippines

I wonder how many doctor-bloggers there are in the Philippines. A hundred? Two hundred? One thousand? I’ve always been on the lookout for Filipino doctor bloggers but so far, I’m acquainted with just one – other than myself, of course.

I used “doctor blogger Philippines” as a search phrase on Google but I came up with a rather haphazard list. Some of the blog posts in the search results date back to years ago. Does that mean there aren’t many Filipino doctor bloggers? Kindred souls, where have you all gone? I wonder.

Filipino Doctor Blogger

My friends sometimes ask me why I blog. I never really knew how exactly to answer that question. And for the first time, I will try to come up with an answer that will satisfy everyone’s curiosity.

Doctor Blogger in the Philippines: Why I Became One

I remember becoming a blogger when I was still a medical student. It wasn’t a planned at all. I was chatting with a friend of mine who happened to be a blogger and he asked me to join him in the blogosphere to keep him company.

I chose a rather crappy blog name, Life and Fever, which is still online up to now. I don’t update it as regularly as I would have wanted to, but I decided to keep it through the years because it has become a part of my history.

In my blog, I could write about anything and everything. It became an online journal of sorts, a place where my opinions were the only ones that mattered.

Back then, I knew nothing about SEO, keyword density, and PageRank. I was a blissfully ignorant med student who found a place on the Internet. I was still hosting my blog on Blogger back then: I hadn’t purchased a domain name yet.

Three years down the line, I fell in love with blogging. A whole lot, I might say. And one of the highlights of 2012 was the birth of a new blog. This blog. I had finally decided to purchase a domain – and it had my name in it, how cool is that?

Not long after, I received an invitation from a television show to be one of their guests. I asked the producer how they found me. “Through your blog posts” was the reply.

That was just one of the many ways my blog has helped broaden my horizon. I found friends, enemies, and reasons to air my opinions. I found an openness to different points of view that I never had before I started blogging. You see, when I started blogging, I also started reading the blogs of others.

I used to give SEO a lot of importance. Okay, maybe I still do. But I have also learned to give importance to things that matter more, such as substance, work quality, and attention to readership.

Filipino Doctor Blogger

Sadly, not many doctor bloggers in the Philippines get the readership they deserve. Not many Filipino doctor bloggers get the chance to contribute to other blogs.

In the blogging world, Filipinos don’t rank too highly; our country is often seen as a content farm where you go to for quantity rather than quality. And that’s the dilemma of Filipino bloggers.

What about Filipino doctors? I’ve written so many times about how doctors, especially general practitioners (primary care physicians), receive more criticism than they deserve. Put that together with the flak that Filipino bloggers receive and you have a population of doctor bloggers that is rather difficult to market.

I guess I’m lucky. I’m sure there are many other doctor bloggers who are way more successful than I, but I can’t complain. My being a Filipino doctor-blogger has opened so many doors for me. And that’s, in a major way, thanks to all of you who continue to read my blog.

Doctor Blogger Philippines

If this is the first time you’ve come across this blog, do stay a little longer. Feel free to leave a comment, ask a question, and get to know me more. If you’re a long-time reader of this website, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Without you, this doctor’s blog would have been futile.

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that, to this humble doctor blogger in the Philippines and to its readers, the year 2013 will be another year of wonderful opportunities. And to all my fellow doctor bloggers, may we blog until we drop dead.

  1. Hi Stef, ever thought of making a directory or fb group of physician bloggers? I can only think of two that I read regularly, but it could help promote collective readership if we can get more together.

  2. Hi, DragonDoc! I actually might not have the time to make such a directory, but I did write about other health bloggers: It's a VERY short list, but I'm hoping to add new entries to it very soon. :)

Thanks for dropping by my blog!

  3. Hi doc! I just came across your blog by searching doctor bloggers Philippines. I also entered the world of blogging when I was still a med student. Your blog inspired me not to give up on my own blog.

    1. Keep blogging, Sheen! We need more health professionals who can reach out to as many readers as possible. Do let me know if you update your blog!
