Smart Blogger Challenge Day 5: How Link Exchange Can Hurt Your Blog

Thursday, February 05, 2015 Stef dela Cruz, MD 0 Comments

Link exchange, link parties – you’ve heard of them. In fact, you’ve probably joined them. I, for one, was once part of a link exchange not too long ago. It was fun, but it was too tedious that I knew I couldn’t keep it up.

You know what they say about things you can’t keep up with? They have to end eventually… especially if Google disapproves!

Smart Blogger Challenge day 5

But before we proceed to today’s 21-Day Smart Blogger Challenge task (we’re on day 5, would you believe?), let’s recap what we’ve done so far.

Smart Blogger Challenge: How’s it been for you?

Our aim is to learn and enjoy at the same time. I know you won’t always agree with the things you read – that’s alright. In fact, that’s wonderful. It means you get to read opinions different from your own.

By reading articles about blogging which were written from a vantage point different from yours, you open your mind to new possibilities.

You also get to know what goes on inside other bloggers’ minds (mine, to be precise). So, how’s it been for you? I hope that you’ve been enjoying the task updates so far.

Let me know what you think about the tasks in the comment section. I would love the feedback! Anyway, let’s go back to the task at hand: the suggested reading for your fifth day in this challenge!

Link Exchange: Yay or Nay?

A lot of good bloggers subscribe to link exchange parties because they believe they need the extra backlinks to strengthen their blog’s online performance. Perhaps they’re right. Or are they?

Here’s what I think, plus a few things I learned about what Google thinks of these backlink schemes we engage in as we try to get ahead of the pack.

Day 5 Reading Task:
Does a link exchange hurt your blog?

Don’t be pissed if you are actively engaging in link exchange! You can continue doing what you’re doing, that’s fine – or you can start providing great content that other blogs can’t help linking back to! Isn’t that more awesome? Doesn’t that bring back the fun part of blogging?

It’s your call. You own your blog and nobody else can tell you what to do with it. But I do hope you are open to suggestions, especially those that just might make life easier on you one, two, or even ten years from now. Good luck, fellow blogger!

Wondering what the 21-Day Smart Blogger Challenge is all about? Join us now and be privy to the reading list! For the challenge, all you have to do is read an article each day. That’s it! You will receive an email each time the reading task is ready. But for you to receive the email updates, you’re going to have to sign up. See the box prompting you for an email address when you scroll down? You will receive the updates once you’ve completed signing up. Good luck!
